Used Non-Food-Grade IBC Totes

Used non food grade IBC totes are caged intermediate bulk containers that previously held industrial products such as chemicals, coatings, cleaners or lubricants, sold as returned from service. Often called used chemical totes, they are the lowest-cost route into IBC storage for non-food work, provided the previous contents are compatible with what you plan to put in them.

Used non food grade IBC totes and used chemical totes explained

This category sits at the most economical corner of the range. Used means no cleaning or inspection program has been applied before sale; the tote is offered as it came out of service. Non food grade means the history is industrial or otherwise non-food, so the tote is not intended for anything you eat, drink or feed. Many buyers search for these as "used chemical totes," and that is a fair description of much of the stock, although previous contents range from mild detergents to more aggressive products.

Because the last fill varies so widely, lot history is the single most important thing to review. Two used non food grade totes can look identical from the outside and be completely different propositions depending on what was inside.

Compatibility comes first

With used chemical totes, the question is not just "is it clean enough" but "is the old product compatible with the new one." Residue from a previous fill can react with, contaminate or discolor whatever you add. Before you order:

Common uses

Same-product refills

Operations that refill totes with the same or a compatible product they originally held, keeping cleaning to a minimum.

Waste and secondary use

Collecting used oil, rinse water or other liquids headed for disposal or recycling, where a pristine bottle is not needed.

Shipping hazardous materials in a used tote

Caged IBCs are commonly UN-marked (for example 31HA1) when new. If you plan to ship hazardous materials in a reused IBC, 49 CFR requires a current periodic test and inspection; an old marking on its own is not enough. We do not claim our totes have been retested unless that is confirmed in your quote, so confirm retest status before using a tote for regulated hazmat transport.

Used vs reconditioned non food grade

If you would rather not deal with residue at all, reconditioned non food grade IBC totes have been cleaned/rinsed and inspected before sale; ask what preparation and component work was done on the lot. Used stock costs less and suits buyers who will clean on site or who are storing a compatible product. For a wider view of the condition choice, see the used IBC totes category; for everything with an industrial history, see non food grade IBC totes.

Sizes and handling

Both sizes share a pallet-sized footprint. The 275 gallon tote is approximately 40 × 48 × 46 in and about 135 lb empty; the 330 gallon tote is approximately 48 × 40 × 53 in and about 150 lb empty. Compare 275 gallon used totes with 330 gallon used totes if you are weighing capacity against height. Typical construction is an HDPE bottle in a galvanized steel cage on a steel, plastic or composite pallet base that takes a forklift or pallet jack. Totes stack when empty and often when filled within the rating on the unit's label, so check the label before stacking full totes.

How to order or get pricing

Use the request a quote form or call 484-787-7479 with the size, condition (used), grade (non food grade), quantity, intended use, the product you plan to store and your delivery ZIP. We confirm availability, price and what we know of the lot history with your quote. Larger quantities lower the per-tote price, full truckloads of about 60 totes are quoted individually, and pickup can be arranged in Pennsville, NJ or Tampa, FL.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between used non food grade totes and used chemical totes?

In practice they describe the same stock: caged IBC totes with an industrial or non-food history, sold as returned from service. Previous contents vary by lot and may include chemicals, cleaners, coatings or lubricants, so always ask what a specific lot held before ordering.

Can a used non food grade tote be cleaned for food use?

We do not recommend it and do not sell non food grade totes for food, beverage or feed contact. If your application involves anything consumed by people or animals, look at food grade listings and confirm suitability, cleaning and any regulatory requirements yourself.

Are these totes approved for shipping hazardous materials?

Not unless confirmed in your quote. Reusing an IBC for hazmat shipping requires a current periodic test and inspection under 49 CFR. Many caged totes carry a UN marking from when they were new, but buyers shipping hazardous materials must confirm retest status before use.

Will there be residue inside a used chemical tote?

Expect some. Used totes are not cleaned before sale, so a heel or film from the last product is normal. Plan how you will drain, rinse and dispose of that residue in line with the rules for the previous contents, or choose reconditioned stock instead.

How many used non food grade totes can I order?

From a single tote up to full truckloads of about 60. Quantity pricing tiers lower the per-tote price as volume goes up. Smaller orders ship by LTL freight to your ZIP, and pickup is available by arrangement at our Pennsville, NJ and Tampa, FL yards.
